\nLast week I wrote about men\u2019s neckties, and also, that I
\nused to give them as Father\u2019s Day gifts, or sometimes I gave him
\nhandkerchiefs.  So this week we\u2019ll talk
\nabout the history of the hankie.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nExcavation in Egypt reveal entombed women of the second and
\nfirst century BCE had finely textured linen handkerchiefs. In Greece,
\nhandkerchiefs were made of fine cotton or linen and often perfumed.  The Romans had several cloths, used by the
\nmale sex.  By the reign of the later
\nRoman emperors, the cloths were no longer plain white, but richly embroidered
\nwith gold, and fringed.  They became a
\nsign of high rank and position.  In
\nByzantine courts they took on ceremonial functions.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/o:p><\/div>\n
\nThe lace handkerchief first appeared during the reign of
\nElizabeth I.  By the 1600\u2019s
\nhandkerchiefs became showy and costly for both men and women.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn the 17th<\/sup> and 18th<\/sup> C handkerchiefs
\nwere oval, round and oblong.  The story
\nis told that Marie Antoinette happened to mention to King Louis XVI that she
\nwas tired of such haphazard shapes, instantly the king decreed the \u201clength of
\nthe handkerchief shall equal its width throughout the kingdom\u201d.   One would think that the king had better
\nthings to ponder.<\/div>\n

\nChildren\u2019s hankies are particularly charming.  <\/div>\n
\nThe Scotty dog was designed by Tom Lamb (note the
\nsignature).  Lamb was born in New York
\nin 1896.  As a young man he invested in
\nhis own textile studio.  His household
\nfabric designs were seen in department stores in NY.<\/div>\n
\nIn the 1920\u2019s Lamb designed a series he called
\n\u201cKiddyland\u201d.  Besides a cartoon series
\nhe introduced a line of children\u2019s toys and accessories.<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nToday these once fashion accessories are becoming very
\ncollectible.  They can be found at flea
