{"id":529,"date":"2012-07-26T21:04:00","date_gmt":"2012-07-26T21:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/26\/hair-2\/"},"modified":"2012-07-26T21:04:00","modified_gmt":"2012-07-26T21:04:00","slug":"hair-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/hair-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Hair"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<\/p>\n<div>\n\u201cGimme head with hair<\/div>\n<div>\nLong beautiful hair<\/div>\n<div>\nShining, gleaming<\/div>\n<div>\nStreaming, flaxen, waxen\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nHair, the musical opened on Broadway in April 1968 and ran<br \/>\nfor 1,750 performances.&nbsp; A London<br \/>\nproduction ran for nearly 2,000 performances.&nbsp;<br \/>\nI saw Hair in Washington DC and I must say it was a revelation.&nbsp; Perhaps it is not so controversial today,<br \/>\nbut profanity, nudity and political rebellion certainly was at that time.&nbsp; Still, many of us can at least hum the<br \/>\ntunes, if not totally successful with all the lyrics.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nHair and textile history?&nbsp;<br \/>\nWell, the point is that hair is an animal fiber, often termed<br \/>\ninterchangeably with fur or wool or kemp depending upon the species of<br \/>\nanimal.&nbsp; For instance, \u201cmy cat has a<br \/>\nbeautiful fur coat but the cat hair all over the furniture is driving me<br \/>\ncrazy\u201d.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Pb423pYk9_Q\/UBGuIpNEHnI\/AAAAAAAAATI\/DlEom6R2cOI\/s1600\/hair+fibers.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"307\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Pb423pYk9_Q\/UBGuIpNEHnI\/AAAAAAAAATI\/DlEom6R2cOI\/s320\/hair+fibers.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nAs you can see from the diagram, wool, hair and kemp are<br \/>\nmorphologically different but all arise from the epidermis of the skin, this<br \/>\nincludes human hair.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nToday, we are not discussing hair as a textile fiber but the<br \/>\nuse of human hair in quite a different way.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nSince ancient times a woman\u2019s hair was regarded as one of<br \/>\nher most attractive<\/div>\n<div>\nphysical attributes.&nbsp;<br \/>\nHair styles reflected the fashion of the day.&nbsp; Curling, straightening, dyeing techniques have been employed both<br \/>\nprofessionally by stylists as well as in the home. Great care was taken&nbsp; in selecting brushes, combs and other<br \/>\naccessories for the lady\u2019s vanity or dressing table.&nbsp; These accessories were often costly and carefully kept safely in<br \/>\nelaborate boxes, or fabric envelopes.&nbsp; Very<br \/>\npopular were embroidered fabric liners or embroidered bags.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ddCqlzjePRE\/UBGuZrv7oRI\/AAAAAAAAATQ\/rOXYhmxM8w0\/s1600\/vanity+set.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"283\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ddCqlzjePRE\/UBGuZrv7oRI\/AAAAAAAAATQ\/rOXYhmxM8w0\/s400\/vanity+set.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nFrom Victorian times to the mid 1900\u2019s a common accessory<br \/>\nfor the vanity was a hair receiver.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThese receptacles can be identified by the center hole in the lid into<br \/>\nwhich hair taken from combs and hairbrushes was \u201cpoked\u201d.&nbsp; Usually round, but may be square in shape,<br \/>\nsome were footed and were made form a variety of materials: porcelain, metal,<br \/>\nglass and celluloid.&nbsp; Celluloid is a<br \/>\ntough thermoplastic compound, which was used to replace ivory.&nbsp; It was easily shaped and used for dressing<br \/>\ntable sets, dolls, picture frames, buttons and buckles.&nbsp; Unfortunately it was flammable and was<br \/>\nsubsequently replaced by Bakelite and Catalin.&nbsp;<br \/>\nBoth are usually referred to as Bakelite, however Bakelite was produced<br \/>\nin only 2 colors, black and brown.&nbsp; Used<br \/>\nfor appliances, pot handles because it did not melt.&nbsp; What we refer to as Bakelite colorful jewelry was actually<br \/>\nCatalin, which was produced in a glorious rainbow of colors.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Celluloid hair receiver<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nSo what happened to the hair from the receivers?&nbsp; Some may think it was used in Victorian hair<br \/>\nwork called Pointe Tresse, using fine hair for embroidery and mourning wreaths.<br \/>\nBut this required straight hair (usually cut) and not tangled from combing.&nbsp; Actually, the hair was used as stuffing for<br \/>\npin cushions and often to stuff ratts.&nbsp;<br \/>\nRatts were made from stuffed netting and inserted as part of the woman\u2019s<br \/>\nhair style for fullness.&nbsp;
