\nThe late Victorian and early Edwardian period of fashion
\nheralded an unprecedented passion for all things lacey, embroidered and
\nberibboned.  It was not only the upper
\nclass that could enjoy luxuries, but the emerging middle class demanded such
\nembellishments for both their clothing and for their home. Huge hats decorated
\nwith French ribbon flowers and veils, gowns of silk with tiers of ruffles,and silk
\ngloves were no longer exclusively for the rich.  Less opulent (and less costly) garments and household furnishings
\nwere being manufactured for an entirely new market.  Shortly after the turn of the century the life style of the
\nmiddle class family changed dramatically. 
\nWhile the wife and mother was still expected to remain at home nurturing
\nthe family and bringing culture and grace to the environment, many modern
\ninnovations had made this task less time consuming.  The invention of the sewing machine years earlier, the telephone,
\nthe washing machine, not to mention the vacuum cleaner and refrigerator gave
\nwomen more time to pursue the activities that before only wealthy women with
\nservants could enjoy.<\/div>\n

\nThe popularity of mail-order catalogs, coming right to your
\ndoor, brought the latest fashion trends.<\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIf you could not afford to replace your wardrobe, you could
\nalways update your look by embellishing your attire at home with the help
\nof  patterns and instructions through
\nmagazine advertisements and pattern books. 
\nOne very popular activity was making yokes and bodices for corset
\ncovers, and other undergarments and lacey neckline trim for nightwear.  Most often crochet technique was used
\nalthough there were many knitted lace and tatted yokes produced.  One advantage to these trimmings was that,
\nunlike machine made lace featured on ready-to-wear garments, these yokes were
\nactually quite sturdy, made of cotton thread and often outlasted the garment
\nupon which they were sewn (probably several garments as these can still be
\nfound today in vintage shops).  Often
\nsilk ribbons were woven through the crochet or knitted netting and these could
\nbe changed to update the look.<\/div>\n
