\u201cThe right of citizens of the Untied States<br \/>\nto vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on<br \/>\naccount of race, color, or previous servitude.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\n<o:p><\/o:p><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->&nbsp;&nbsp;<!--[endif]--><o:p><\/o:p><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-J9OzzwJRVnk\/UJQV7QIv-qI\/AAAAAAAAAk8\/g38iMn5kkg4\/s1600\/election+day+3.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; \u201cThe right of citizens of the<br \/>\nUnited States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or<br \/>\nby any state on account of sex.\u201d&nbsp; There<br \/>\nis a very interesting article written by Jason Shaprio in El Palacio magazine<br \/>\n(Fall 2012) which states that while New Mexico became a state in 1912 New<br \/>\nMexican women were not granted the vote until 1920.&nbsp; Surprisingly, NM was the last western state to grant women\u2019s<br \/>\nsuffrage.&nbsp; According to Shapiro, \u201cthe<br \/>\nstates of Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Washington, California, Kansas,<br \/>\nOregon, Nevada and Oklahoma all granted women the right to vote prior to the<br \/>\npassing of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> amendment.<\/p>\n<p>In 1924 the Indian Citizenship Act granted all native Americans the rights of citizenship, including the right to vote in federal elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-zW50uZxrZwA\/UJQWM31tsQI\/AAAAAAAAAlE\/XK-Stk1Fzlo\/s1600\/election+day+4.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><br \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<br \/>\nThis textile bag was used to store paper ballots in a 1960 election.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn 1961 the XXIII amendment allowed voters in the District<br \/>\nof Columbia to vote in presidential elections.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-zW50uZxrZwA\/UJQWM31tsQI\/AAAAAAAAAlE\/XK-Stk1Fzlo\/s1600\/election+day+4.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-zW50uZxrZwA\/UJQWM31tsQI\/AAAAAAAAAlE\/XK-Stk1Fzlo\/s320\/election+day+4.jpg\" width=\"121\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In 1971 the XXVI amendment set the minimum voting age at 18.<br \/>\n\u201cThe rights of citizens of the United States, who are 18 years, or older, to<br \/>\nvote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on<br \/>\naccount of age.\u201d (In the 1972 election, 12,214,601 voters from age 18-24)<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><\/div>\n<div>\nTextiles have been an expression of political thought since<br \/>\nthe beginning of political influence.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe recent biennial symposium of the Textile Society of America was<br \/>\nentitled \u201cTextiles and Politics\u201d (See my blog&nbsp;, Sept. 28, 2012) &nbsp;&nbsp;Not, I suppose, that early cave men wore campaign buttons but<br \/>\ncertainly when the ancient civilizations were formed there were visible forms<br \/>\nof support for the government, but probably not visible forms of<br \/>\nopposition.&nbsp; In the modern political<br \/>\narena there are many \u201cpolitical\u201d textiles, including banners, flags, quilts and<br \/>\nbandannas.&nbsp; Just because women weren\u2019t<br \/>\nable to vote, didn\u2019t mean they were not interested in the political situation<br \/>\nof the time and many examples of such quilt textiles with names such as Whigs\u2019<br \/>\nRose or Garfield\u2019s Monument, many named after first Ladies. <\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-peInIFfRdz8\/UJQWdTEN4wI\/AAAAAAAAAlM\/ai9S7wQiIdg\/s1600\/election+day+5.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;
