\nWith the holiday season fast approaching some thought goes
\nto what to wear for those dressy events. 
\nOne of the most popular fashion statements continues to be velvet, which
\nhas been popular for well over 800 years. The exact history of the manufacture
\nof velvet is sketchy, but the prevailing evidence indicates that it originated
\nalong the fabled Silk Road and was brought west with the Arab invasion of North
\nAfrica and Eastern Europe.  By the
\nRenaissance, Italy had become the leading center for its production. The term
\nvelvet comes from the Italian \u201cvello\u201d meaning fleece, \u201cvelluto\u201d (velvet) means
\nfleecy.<\/div>\n

\n<\/o:p><\/div>\n
\nActually, velvet is not one type of fabric, but rather a
\ntype of weave, a woven pile fabric, which can be made of different fibers
\nincluding cotton, silk and rayon\/acetate. 
\nOther examples of pile fabrics include corduroy, velour, and terry
\ncloth.  The weave is a supplementary
\nwarp over a plain weave ground. 
\nOriginally, once the ground was woven the supplementary warp was woven
\nover thin, sharp rods.  When the rods
\nwere removed the warp was slit resulting in a pile, soft and luxurious.
\nDifferent effects could be achieved by altering the height and texture of the
\npile.  The famous Italian \u201caltobasseo\u201d
\nhad varying pile heights against a gold ground.  When completely covered with pile the fabric is \u201csolid\u201d, when
\npart of the pile is removed (now with chemicals) it is termed \u201cvoided\u201d.  This voided silk velvet scarf shows the fine

\nCurrently, velvet is made by a double-cloth method of weaving two
\ncloths face-to-face with the separate pile threads joining the two layers
\ncreating a stable pile.  The pile is
\nthen cut with a knife creating two fabrics. 
\nThe pile is then trimmed, while the height of the pile may vary, true
\nvelvet is never longer than 1\/8 inch. If it is <\/div>\n
\nlonger, it is referred to as
\n\u201cplush\u201d.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIf the fiber used is cotton, the resulting fabric is called
\n\u201cvelveteen\u201d which produces a heavier textile more suitable for outerwear and
\nupholstery because it does not have the draping quality of silk velvet.  Cotton velveteen is made with a supplementary weft ( not warp, like other fibers).<\/div>\n

\nVelvet, especially made of silk or rayon\/acetate can be
\nembellished in many ways.  It can be
\nembossed, crushed, batiked, painted and embroidered.<\/div>\n

\n This is a sample of a lighter, embroidered cotton velvet. While the drape is heavier than silk velvet it is still appropriate for apparel.<\/o:p><\/div>\n
