\nThe Wall Street Journal (Thursday, January 3, 2013) featured
\nan article in the Personal Journal column titled \u201cMade By Hand, Learned Online\u201d
\nabout online, interactive courses available on many subjects which can be
\nstudied at home.  Online learning has
\nbeen available for some years, but in-home study has been around for more than
\na hundred years.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nFrom the late 19thC. women\u2019s magazines featured articles on
\nhomemade textiles, crochet, knitting and embroidery and lace work.  While this may have sparked interest in
\ncreative endeavors, there was virtually no instruction on technique, but rather
\na vague description(and illustration) of the finished product.<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\nIn the early 20thC entire needlework magazines were
\navailable by subscription.  The finished
\nwork was illustrated in more detail but the instructions were obviously not
\nmeant for the novice, no how-to but rather \u201c1st<\/sup> row: 1 t in the 7th<\/sup>
\nst from hook(ch 2, skip 2 sts, t in the next stitch) repeat\u201d  See what I mean?<\/div>\n

\nIn the 1930\u2019s RFD(Rural Free Delivery) brought mail-order
\ncatalogs offering iron-on transfers, pre-printed fabrics, and stencils.  Quilt kits and patterns were also available
\nas well as pre-printed embroidery patterns with appropriate embroidery needles
\nand threads included.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\nBy the 1940\u2019s instruction booklets featuring products of
\ncompanies such as J&P Coats or Clark\u2019s O.N.T. were available in stores on
\nhundreds of needlework topics at a very reasonable price (some were 10
\ncents).  Still, while the finished
\nproduct was, once again clearly illustrated, there was little of basic
\ninstruction.  Presumably, women were
\nexpected to have already mastered the technique.<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBy the late 1900\u2019s sophisticated instructional books on all
\ntopics offered sections of basic technique, with many color illustrations.  The page-by page instructions were clear and
\neasy to follow.  Also at this time many
\nTV series were produced on everything from culinary arts, painting and
\nscrapbooking.  Among the most popular
\nwere productions featuring quilting and embroidery.  Frequently these series also produced tapes of the programs for
\nyour VCR so that you could watch, rewind, try your own techniques as many times
\nas necessary.  Then came CDs and
\nDVDs  of instruction.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nNow, of course computer technology and the internet have
\ninteractive instruction available on your computer, or other devices.  For some time universities have offered
\ncourses, language labs are improving your grammar and pronunciation of Spanish
\nand 64 other languages.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBut back to the WSJ article. Online companies are offering
\ncourses for crafts and fine arts instruction. 
\nOne such vendor offers courses composed of several lessons
\nprofessionally filmed, with the capability of asking questions of the
\ninstructor.  Again these lessons can be
\nreplayed for further information.  <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIf one of your New Year\u2019s resolutions is learning a new
\ncraft, language or raising the level of a hobby you now have no excuse.  It can be done right at your desk at home.  A Textile History course which includes
\nfiber identification, ethnic textiles and museum collections would be of
\ninterest to me..Hmmm.  <\/div>\n
