Online learning has<br \/>\nbeen available for some years, but in-home study has been around for more than<br \/>\na hundred years.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nFrom the late 19thC. women\u2019s magazines featured articles on<br \/>\nhomemade textiles, crochet, knitting and embroidery and lace work.&nbsp; While this may have sparked interest in<br \/>\ncreative endeavors, there was virtually no instruction on technique, but rather<br \/>\na vague description(and illustration) of the finished product.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ImL9Dans44M\/UOdFwPyPPFI\/AAAAAAAAA0Q\/0cQo7n2D-8I\/s1600\/made+by+hand+2.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; The finished<br \/>\nwork was illustrated in more detail but the instructions were obviously not<br \/>\nmeant for the novice, no how-to but rather \u201c1<sup>st<\/sup> row: 1 t in the 7<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\nst from hook(ch 2, skip 2 sts, t in the next stitch) repeat\u201d&nbsp; Quilt kits and patterns were also available<br \/>\nas well as pre-printed embroidery patterns with appropriate embroidery needles<br \/>\nand threads included.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-CCi63KePh9g\/UOdG3xqJXNI\/AAAAAAAAA0w\/7sc0sZcKP5M\/s1600\/made+by+hand+6.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; Still, while the finished<br \/>\nproduct was, once again clearly illustrated, there was little of basic<br \/>\ninstruction.&nbsp; Presumably, women were<br \/>\nexpected to have already mastered the technique.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; Also at this time many<br \/>\nTV series were produced on everything from culinary arts, painting and<br \/>\nscrapbooking.&nbsp; Among the most popular<br \/>\nwere productions featuring quilting and embroidery.&nbsp; Frequently these series also produced tapes of the programs for<br \/>\nyour VCR so that you could watch, rewind, try your own techniques as many times<br \/>\nas necessary.&nbsp; Then came CDs and<br \/>\nDVDs&nbsp; of instruction.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nNow, of course computer technology and the internet have<br \/>\ninteractive instruction available on your computer, or other devices.&nbsp; For some time universities have offered<br \/>\ncourses, language labs are improving your grammar and pronunciation of Spanish<br \/>\nand 64 other languages.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nBut back to the WSJ article.
