\nWhen I grew up in the Mid-Atlantic there were groups of
\n\u201cPlain People\u201d living in rural communities all around , in nearby Pennsylvania,
\nIndiana and Ohio.  The Amish, a sect of
\nMennonite, live a simple lifestyle which shuns pretentiousness and modern
\naffectations.  Although there are
\nvariations among the communities, most Amish live a quiet life where family is
\nof upmost importance.  They are known
\nfor high quality craftsmanship, especially in furniture production and style,
\ntextile skills and great food (sausages, breads, sho-fly pie).  Today there are nearly 250,000 members of
\nvarious sects living in 27 states and Canada, but a popular tourist destination
\nis Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where tour buses bring visitors to the
\n\u201cPennsylvania Dutch\u201d.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nA sought after textile has been Amish quilts which, in times
\npast, were made entirely by hand or perhaps on a treadle sewing machine.  The colors were muted, dark and generally
\nsomber which reflected the clothing they wore\u2026dark blue, grey, black, and
\nsometimes dark green or brown, often with a strong accent color of fuschia, red
\nor yellow.  The designs were abstract in
\nPA Amish.  Today one must be very
\ncareful when purchasing an \u201cAmish\u201d quilt, as they are often factory
\nreproductions, not vintage. One important characteristic of an Amish quilt is
\nan \u201cintentional mistake\u201d, a misaligned block or small crooked seam, for they
\nbelieve only God can create perfection.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOther popular Amish textiles are rugs: braided, hooked or
\nknit and embroidered towels.  While
\nAmish and Mennonites discouraged ornate decorations, there was  approval for
\nsamplers and decorated \u201cshow\u201d towels made primarily by young girls to demonstrate
\ntheir needle skills. <\/div>\n

\nThe textiles I present today are Amish buggy shawls.  Riding in an open buggy can be chilly, even
\nin mild weather and woven wool shawls were used as lap robes.  During the winter months, they were much
\nheavier.  These large shawls, usually
\nfringed, measure approximately 60×120 inches and can be found in shades of grey,
\nblack and brown, both plain and plaid design. 
\nBecause they were heavily used, small tears and worn spots were repaired
\nand it is unusual to find one in near perfect condition.  Even with small defects they make lovely
\nthrows and bring a piece of history to your family.    <\/div>\n
