{"id":505,"date":"2013-01-18T20:53:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-18T20:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/18\/amish-buggy-shawls-2\/"},"modified":"2013-01-18T20:53:00","modified_gmt":"2013-01-18T20:53:00","slug":"amish-buggy-shawls-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/amish-buggy-shawls-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Amish Buggy Shawls"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<\/p>\n<div>\n\u201cTis a gift to be simple\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Shaker Dancing<br \/>\nsong, Joseph Brackett<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nWhen I grew up in the Mid-Atlantic there were groups of<br \/>\n\u201cPlain People\u201d living in rural communities all around , in nearby Pennsylvania,<br \/>\nIndiana and Ohio.&nbsp; The Amish, a sect of<br \/>\nMennonite, live a simple lifestyle which shuns pretentiousness and modern<br \/>\naffectations.&nbsp; Although there are<br \/>\nvariations among the communities, most Amish live a quiet life where family is<br \/>\nof upmost importance.&nbsp; They are known<br \/>\nfor high quality craftsmanship, especially in furniture production and style,<br \/>\ntextile skills and great food (sausages, breads, sho-fly pie).&nbsp; Today there are nearly 250,000 members of<br \/>\nvarious sects living in 27 states and Canada, but a popular tourist destination<br \/>\nis Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where tour buses bring visitors to the<br \/>\n\u201cPennsylvania Dutch\u201d.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nA sought after textile has been Amish quilts which, in times<br \/>\npast, were made entirely by hand or perhaps on a treadle sewing machine.&nbsp; The colors were muted, dark and generally<br \/>\nsomber which reflected the clothing they wore\u2026dark blue, grey, black, and<br \/>\nsometimes dark green or brown, often with a strong accent color of fuschia, red<br \/>\nor yellow.&nbsp; The designs were abstract in<br \/>\nPA Amish.&nbsp; Today one must be very<br \/>\ncareful when purchasing an \u201cAmish\u201d quilt, as they are often factory<br \/>\nreproductions, not vintage.
