\nFloor coverings in the 1800\u2019s ranged from very expensive woven wool carpets to cheaper in-grain woven carpets to straw and rush
\nmattings.  The straw mattings were
\npopular until nearly the 20th<\/sup> C as they were used to protect more expensive
\ncarpeting from wear.  They could easily
\nbe removed, cleaned and replaced near doorways and fireplaces which received
\nthe most dirt.  Unfortunately, the straw
\nmattings were not very durable. By the mid-19thC housewives were choosing floor
\ncloths (oil cloths that they could paint in patterns) which were easy to clean
\nand therefore useful in the kitchen, but lacked warmth. Other, small fabric
\nrugs, were frequently sewn by the homemaker. 
\nThe most popular of these were hooked rugs with designs ranging from
\nsimple geometrics to the elaborate and complex. Due to the simplicity of the
\ntechnique these rugs and mats remained popular throughout the 19th<\/sup> C
\nand experienced a revival during the early 20th<\/sup> C.when rug-hooking classes were offered and women used these occasions for social
\ngatherings( much like quilting bees).<\/div>\n

\nThe wool strips used 
\n(probably firstly from scrap wool) were drawn from the back to the front
\nof the ground fabric with a hook to form loops.  Properly done, the loops were of even height and the beginning
\nand ending \u201ctabs\u201d of the strips were brought to the front of the rug (later
\nthey would be trimmed flush with the pile of the finished mat) thus insuring
\nthe row of loops would not be pulled out. Most were hooked on loosely woven
\njute or burlap.<\/div>\n

\nTo fill in large background areas, some used \u201cspeed
\nhooks\u201d.  Speed hooks do what hand held
\nhooks do, but in a different way.  While
\nhand hooks lift the yarn from the underside of the foundation cloth, forming
\nloops on the top side, speed hooks pushes the yarn from the top side into loops
\non the under side.  Therefore the
\nfinished surface is the under side.<\/div>\n
\nSusan Burr Needle (speed needle) could be used with strips
\nof varying widths and could be adjusted to make loops of varying heights.<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nSo-called \u201clatch hooked rugs\u201d are made with a tool that
\nmakes knotted rugs using cut pieces of yarn. 
\nThe rugs have a shag surface instead of the even surface of a hooked
\nrug.<\/div>\n
