By the mid-19thC housewives were choosing floor<br \/>\ncloths (oil cloths that they could paint in patterns) which were easy to clean<br \/>\nand therefore useful in the kitchen, but lacked warmth. Other, small fabric<br \/>\nrugs, were frequently sewn by the homemaker.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe most popular of these were hooked rugs with designs ranging from<br \/>\nsimple geometrics to the elaborate and complex. Speed hooks do what hand held<br \/>\nhooks do, but in a different way.&nbsp; While<br \/>\nhand hooks lift the yarn from the underside of the foundation cloth, forming<br \/>\nloops on the top side, speed hooks pushes the yarn from the top side into loops<br \/>\non the under side.&nbsp; Therefore the<br \/>\nfinished surface is the under side.<\/div>\n<div>\nSusan Burr Needle (speed needle) could be used with strips<br \/>\nof varying widths and could be adjusted to make loops of varying heights.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;
