\nSome have called quilts made in the 1930\u2019s \u201cdepression
\nquilts\u201d.  For the most part these were
\nactually bright, cheery pieced quilts constructed from small cotton
\nscraps.  One word here, the quilters did
\nnot cut up clothing to make their quilts!!!!! Clothing was patched, darned,
\nhemmed and lengthened and handed down when outgrown.  Clothing that was too worn or stained could have been used to
\nmake rag rugs, but usually not quilts. 
\nWhat was used were scraps of cotton fabric left after cutting clothing
\npatterns or curtains.  The dress fabric
\nfrom your sister\u2019s favorite dress that you see in your patchwork quilt was
\npieces of these leftovers.  Often, women
\nwould save bags of scraps and then share them so that there was a wide variety
\nof fabrics for piecing.  Some of the
\n1930\u2019s quilts were made from hundreds of very small pieces of cloth.  There were contests with prizes for the
\nquilts with the most pieces, or the smallest pieces (some were the size of
\npostage stamps).  <\/div>\n

\nToday I wish to share quilts, or rather bedcovers (these had
\nno middle batting, only a pieced front and backing, usually tied, not quilted)
\nthat are not bright, cheery, nor made from small scraps but come from the
\ndecades of the Great Depression.  While these
\nwere not particularly artful, nontheless, they were perfectly suited for a man\u2019s
\nor boy\u2019s bed and were very warm.<\/div>\n

\nThese quilts are made from men\u2019s wool suiting fabrics.  Of course, they were not made from men\u2019s
\nsuits.  Most men had only one suit, if
\nthey were lucky, and I cannot imagine any housewife taking a pair of scissors
\nto the garment.  Again, they did not cut
\nup clothing to make quilts during this period. Looking carefully at the wool
\npieces it is apparent that these fabrics were samples from woolen mills.  Salesmen would take sample books of swatches
\nto tailors and off-the-rack clothing manufacturers who, in turn, could order
\nyardage.  When the mill issued a new
\nline of fabrics in the latest colors and patterns, the old fabrics were retired
\nand new sample books were distributed. 
\nThe old samples were perfect for patchwork as they were already cut to a
\nstandard size and ready to sew.  How
\nfortunate to have a source for these sample books!!<\/div>\n
