\nThe Hmong are an ethnic people, originally from the
\nmountainous regions of China who were relocated southward by the Chinese
\ngovernment (along with other tribes) in the 18th<\/sup> C to
\nbecome one of the subgroups of Miao ethnicity. In the mid 19th<\/sup> C
\nthey migrated to the mountainous regions of Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam.  During the Viet Nam War many of those living
\nin Laos and Viet Nam aided the American effort and when the US left the area
\nthey were forced to flee to refugee camps in Thailand.  Eventually, many emigrated to the US.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Hmong have brought with them their beautiful needlework
\ncalled Pa ndau (pronounced pond-ouw) meaning \u201cflower cloth\u201d.  Pa ndau includes crewelwork,  cross-stitch, embroidery, needlepoint and
\nreverse appliqu\u00e9.  The most noteworthy
\nis reverse appliqu\u00e9.<\/div>\n

\nA few months ago, I wrote a blog about the San Blas Kuna
\nIndians of Panama and their tradition of mola-making (also using reverse
\nappliqu\u00e9).  You cannot mistake one
\ntradition for the other.  Mola makers
\nuse mainly pictorial motifs while Hmong stitchers use geometric designs.  To obtain the amazing symmetry of their
\ngeometrics, the Hmong precut the multifolded design before assembling the
\nlayers, while Molas are layered first and then the design is cut. Molas are
\nrarely symmetrical due to their pictorial nature.<\/div>\n

\nThe stitches in Pa ndau appliqu\u00e9 are nearly invisible.  After the reverse appliqu\u00e9 is complete,
\nembellishment may be added by extremely fine embroidery or the addition of
\nfurther reverse appliqu\u00e9 or simple surface appliqu\u00e9. <\/span><\/div>\n
