{"id":487,"date":"2013-05-24T20:14:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T20:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/24\/wish-you-were-here-embroidered-vintage-postcards-2\/"},"modified":"2013-05-24T20:14:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-24T20:14:00","slug":"wish-you-were-here-embroidered-vintage-postcards-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/wish-you-were-here-embroidered-vintage-postcards-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Wish You Were Here &#8211; Embroidered Vintage Postcards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<\/p>\n<div>\nWish You Were Here<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nWhen I travel I usually collect postcards, some of which I<br \/>\nactually send to the folks back home, but more often I tend to save these<br \/>\nsouvenirs.&nbsp; The photographs and\/or<br \/>\nartwork are amazing, never is there one of long airport lines or torrential<br \/>\nrains or blizzards.&nbsp; All are happy<br \/>\nreminders.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-UHj9AaUbNeI\/UZ_FwMr_y9I\/AAAAAAAABSI\/V3Kag1iHjJ8\/s1600\/postcard+5.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"204\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-UHj9AaUbNeI\/UZ_FwMr_y9I\/AAAAAAAABSI\/V3Kag1iHjJ8\/s320\/postcard+5.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nIn the last part of the 19thC postcards were standard forms<br \/>\nof communication, not necessarily from vacation venues.&nbsp; The cards were inexpensive (no envelopes and<br \/>\nthe postage was less than was required for a letter).&nbsp; Often they were sent as greetings for holidays or just to say<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m thinking about you\u201d.&nbsp; These cards<br \/>\nare a great source of Victorian art and can be found at nearly every flea<br \/>\nmarket or antique shop.&nbsp; I especially<br \/>\nlike the ones that have actually been sent, with postmarks and addresses and<br \/>\nshort messages.&nbsp; They let me wonder<br \/>\nabout the people (both the senders and the receivers) and what they were doing<br \/>\non that Easter morning or what relation they had to each other or whether they<br \/>\nhad as great a vacation as they indicated.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-oQZXCaK7DB8\/UZ_F5oSqZhI\/AAAAAAAABSQ\/TyA5kbH3vOQ\/s1600\/POstcards+1.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"257\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-oQZXCaK7DB8\/UZ_F5oSqZhI\/AAAAAAAABSQ\/TyA5kbH3vOQ\/s400\/POstcards+1.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThere is a group of vintage postal cards that are textile<br \/>\nrelated.&nbsp; These are embroidered cards<br \/>\nthat were popular in the first decades of the 20thC .&nbsp; One type of card featured a scene or greeting embroidered on a<br \/>\nlightweight voile fabric.&nbsp; The<br \/>\nembroidery was then affixed to the postcard cardboard, usually including a thin<br \/>\npaper frame to protect the stitchery.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThese cards usually commemorated a holiday such as Christmas or a<br \/>\nbirthday or anniversary and were kept as touching momentoes.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nAnother type of embroidered work was professionally stitched<br \/>\ndirectly on the card, usually as an accent, over the artwork.&nbsp; These were especially popular with<br \/>\nservicemen stationed overseas.&nbsp; Later,<br \/>\ndue to demand for these souvenirs, many countries created cards as part of a<br \/>\nseries, demonstrating native crafts, costumes and scenery.
