\nEvery spring these types of signs appear on nearly every
\nstreet corner and shopping center bulletin board.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nClearly most people have taken the concept of spring
\ncleaning to heart and have accumulated boxes of unwanted goods.  These items they sell and with the monies
\nthey collect people then flock to other sales to purchase bargains to refill
\ntheir cupboards and closets and garages. 
\nSort of an endless cycle, I guess.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIf, however, you are a collector of vintage textiles, these
\nsigns are treasure maps indicating where one might find treasures, indeed. From the \u201cso ugly, it\u2019s actually pretty neat\u201d to lovely
\nlinens and handcrafted laces and fabrics, one man\u2019s trash can become your
\ntreasure.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn April I wrote about protecting your textile collection
\nwith proper cleaning and storage.  Today
\nI wish to discuss Protecting Yourself. 
\nThis may sound a bit strange at first but vintage textiles that have
\nlived a long life outside the clean conditions of shops and museums can harbor
\nall sorts of unpleasant problems.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nConsider the possible conditions of barn and cellar storage,
\nof storing used and soiled textiles together with whatever else is in that old
\ntrunk. A good friend actually found a great quilt beside a dumpster.  But do not let this deter you from your
\nhunt!!!  Just take a few easy
\nprecautions and all will be well.<\/div>\n

\n<\/o:p><\/div>\n
\nWhen you bring home your great find, if it is larger than a
\nhandkerchief, try to examine your box, trunk or large plastic bag of goodies
\noutside, or at least in the garage.  Please
\ndo not empty everything onto your dining room table or bed for sorting.  <\/div>\n

\nThis may be overkill. 
\nWhat you may want to have on hand are plastic gloves (the thin kind worn
\nby the servers in the bakery or deli and can be purchased in a kitchen supply
\nstore or a drug store.)  You can use
\nthese to examine even the most soiled fabrics and then can be tossed.  If you have any allergic or pulmonary
\nconditions you will want to wear a protective mask that is available in every
\nhardware store or big box store.  Lint
\nfibers are easily airborne and you don\u2019t want to be inhaling them, especially
\nif you are fortunate enough to have many textiles to sort and clean.  Remember, even small textile scraps can be
\ncleaned and used in numerous ways as appliqu\u00e9s or patches for a tote bag, or
\nstripped for a hand made rug or mat.  So
\nafter careful airing and cleaning you will have other additions for your
\ncollection.  Never add an additional
\ntextile to your stored collections until you have carefully examined and
\npossibly cleaned it, one small insect can contaminate your other fabrics.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSo gather your local newspaper, your GPS and your wallet and
\nseek out those bargains!!!<\/div>\n
