\nHave you ever faced a missing button, a drooping hemline or
\ngaping closure?<\/div>\n
\nTextiles often need additional \u201chardware\u201d for them to
\nfunction as articles of clothing: buttons, zippers and pins.   Far back into history, as early as the
\nBronze Age, metal skewer-like objects served as clasps to hold lengths of whole
\ncloth together, forming a semi-fitting article of apparel to function as a
\nloose body cover and protection from the elements.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn Roman times these closures, known as \u201cFibulae\u201d, served as
\nbrooches to fasten tunics and togas . 
\nWealthy folk in Medieval Europe used elaborate pins made of precious
\nmetals and ivory, and by the 1400\u2019s pins were made from drawn wire and much
\nmore affordable to the common population.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHowever these early fasteners had a slight disadvantage in
\nthat they were quite sharp, there are many references to their use through the
\nages as weapons.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIt wasn\u2019t until the mid 1800\u2019s that a mechanic cum inventor,
\nWalter Hunt, developed a   u-shaped pin whose point is forced into a safety
\nclasp by a spring.  This invention
\nbecame invaluable as a closure for cloth diapers (baby protection).  A sample of the Hunt pin is part of the NY
\nMuseum of Modern Art.  It really is a functional
\npiece of sculpture, when you consider it<\/div>\n
