\nhas been rough weather for the US Midwest and East Coast.  Large snowfalls and very, very cold weather
\nwith high winds have made this late fall one to remember (yes, it isn\u2019t winter
\nquite yet).<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDuring
\ncold weather we turn to \u201ccomfort\u201d fabrics: wooly socks and caps, fleece jackets
\nand chenille robes.  One such fabric has
\nbeen a part of the winter textile scene for many, many generations: FLANNEL<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

\nof us can remember flannel pj\u2019s (some with feet!), flannel sheets for the beds
\nand flannel shirts.  Every outerwear
\ncatalog still offers these textiles as they are easy care, warm and relatively
\ninexpensive.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nFlannel
\nis a type of weave, there are no fibers named \u201c\u201dflannel\u201d.  Flannel 
\nfabric can be created by using cotton, wool and manufactured
\nfibers.  Having originated in Wales, the
\nword \u201cflannel\u201d is derived from a Welsh word \u201cgwlamen\u201d which means related to
\nwool.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nWool
\nflannel is known for its draping qualities and is usually used as a suiting
\nfabric.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\nRemember
\nhearing about the movie \u201cThe Man in the Gray Flannel suit\u201d, 1956, with Gregory
\nPeck?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

Most flannel textiles today are made from cotton
\nand\/or acrylic fibers. The woven fabric is napped.  Napping is a finishing process which uses a cylinder covered with
\nteasels or wires over which the stretched cloth is passed raising a nap on the
\nsurface.  The protruding fibers cause
\nthe finished cloth to be warmer, more compact and softer<\/span>
