The origins of this design technique<br \/>\nremain unclear. We know this process dates back to Egyptian times, nearly 2,000<br \/>\nyears ago, from samples found in Egyptian tombs.&nbsp; Some believe SE Asian batiks originated in India as India<br \/>\nproduced the fine cotton necessary for the fine detailing of the designs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">The<br \/>\nword \u201cbatik\u201d comes from Malay \u201ctik\u201d meaning spot,dot or drop.&nbsp; There are over 3,000 batik designs, which<br \/>\nare grouped as follows:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<ol start=\"1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">geometric: garis<br \/>\n     miring, ceplokan, kawang, tumpal, and tambal miring (a kind of patchwork<br \/>\n     design believed to have magical properties.)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">non-geometric: semen<br \/>\n     (swirling foliage with stylized animals and birds, cloud designs)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">isen : simple,<br \/>\n     repetitive&nbsp; background designs found<br \/>\n     in the less expensive batiks<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">Motifs<br \/>\nwere inspired by culture, religion and nature.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThere are few contemporary batik motifs, instead the tradition continues<br \/>\nwith the continued use of traditional designs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\">One<br \/>\nmethod of applying the resist is the use of a \u201ccanting\u201d(Tjanting), a small<br \/>\ncopper vessel with a spout, resembling the bowl of a pipe with an attached<br \/>\nhandle.&nbsp; Cantings may have more than one<br \/>\nspout in parallel.&nbsp; The bowl is filled<br \/>\nwith the molten wax (made from beeswax and paraffin) and holding the tool like<br \/>\na stylus the artist draws the design with the wax flowing from the spout.&nbsp; This type of batik is referred&nbsp; to as Tulis, meaning to write or draw. Since<br \/>\ntrue batik is reversible, the waxing process must be repeated on the reverse<br \/>\nside.
