\nMalaysia- Batik 2 <\/h1>\n

\nBatik
\nis a method of design using wax resist. The origins of this design technique
\nremain unclear. We know this process dates back to Egyptian times, nearly 2,000
\nyears ago, from samples found in Egyptian tombs.  Some believe SE Asian batiks originated in India as India
\nproduced the fine cotton necessary for the fine detailing of the designs.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nword \u201cbatik\u201d comes from Malay \u201ctik\u201d meaning spot,dot or drop.  There are over 3,000 batik designs, which
\nare grouped as follows:<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
    \n
  1. geometric: garis
    \n miring, ceplokan, kawang, tumpal, and tambal miring (a kind of patchwork
    \n design believed to have magical properties.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. non-geometric: semen
    \n (swirling foliage with stylized animals and birds, cloud designs)<\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. isen : simple,
    \n repetitive  background designs found
    \n in the less expensive batiks<\/o:p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \nMotifs
    \nwere inspired by culture, religion and nature. 
    \nThere are few contemporary batik motifs, instead the tradition continues
    \nwith the continued use of traditional designs.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
    \n<\/div>\n
    \nOne
    \nmethod of applying the resist is the use of a \u201ccanting\u201d(Tjanting), a small
    \ncopper vessel with a spout, resembling the bowl of a pipe with an attached
    \nhandle.  Cantings may have more than one
    \nspout in parallel.  The bowl is filled
    \nwith the molten wax (made from beeswax and paraffin) and holding the tool like
    \na stylus the artist draws the design with the wax flowing from the spout.  This type of batik is referred  to as Tulis, meaning to write or draw. Since
    \ntrue batik is reversible, the waxing process must be repeated on the reverse
    \nside. The artist draws freehand and, therefore, Tulis batik may be very
    \nintricate.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

    \nBecause
    \nproducing designs with a canting is very time-consuming, batik artists may use
    \na metal block made of strips of thin copper set upright soldered to a metal
    \nbase with a curved metal handle. Using this metal tool (called a \u201ccap\u201d) dipped
    \ninto molten wax, a single worker could stamp up to 20 lengths of cloth per day
    \nas each cap consists of the entire design element.  Several caps of different sizes and shapes could be used, with as
    \nmany as ten pairs of caps needed for complex designs<\/span><\/div>\n

    \nAfter
    \nthe waxing, the first dying is done using a combination of chemical and natural
    \ndyes.  After the initial dying, wax from
    \nthe areas next to be dyed is scraped away or reapplied for additional
    \ndyeing.  Once all color has been applied
    \nthe fabric is washed and soaked in as fixing solution.  Thorough rinsing follows and a boiling water
    \nbath melts remaining wax, which is then saved.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
