\nI wrote (July, 2012) praises for the needle!!  Today I look at the needle\u2019s essential
\ncompanion, THREAD. Callaway Textile Dictionary defines thread as \u201ca fine
\ncotton, wool, flax etc., spun to considerable length\u2026Applied also to a similar
\nproduct from glass, asbestos, a ductile metal etc.  \u2026 Such a cord composed of two or more yarns twisted together and
\nfinished (mercerized) \u2026Used chiefly in sewing.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSo you see, there are many, many types of threads from
\nvarious fibers, in various weights ( called size, the higher the number, the
\nfiner the thread).  <\/div>\n
\nEarly women\u2019s magazines featured advertisements for spools
\nand clothing manufacturers could order from sample books from thread companies.<\/div>\n

\nToday, one can find spools of thread in hundreds of colors
\nand manufactured for specific sewing requirements, whether hand sewing, machine
\nwork or embellishing.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nEarly sewing required the lengths of threads to be wound
\naround a device called, appropriately, a thread winder to keep the strands from
\ntangling.  These implements ranged from
\nvery simple to elaborate ones made of mother-of-pearl or ivory. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n Modern thread spools are usually plastic,
\nalthough there are still wooden or glass spools to be found in shops with
\nvintage items or in sewing baskets with other accessories.  One caution, be sure to test the thread
\nstrength of old spools because the tensile strength can be compromised due to
\nexposure to heat or simply, age.<\/div>\n
