\nThe Shroud of Turin<\/span><\/div>\n

\nI have often given a lecture entitled \u201dMagic Clothes of
\nPower\u201d.  There are many instances of
\ntextiles that are reported to have special powers.  These fabrics are not merely symbols of power, such as military
\nuniforms or religious vestments, but have intrinsic powers, which are derived
\nfrom special fibers, or are granted properties from \u201cother-worldly\u201d
\nsources.  Folklore and literature are
\nsources of many tales of \u201cclothes of power\u201d such as special cloaks, flying
\ncarpets and ruby red shoes.  Many people
\nhave traditions that  include reverence
\nfor textiles which, they believe, can provide protection or bring good fortune.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nLast Sunday the Shroud of Turin went on exhibition in Turin,
\nItaly, which will run until June, 24th. As early as the 6th<\/sup> C there have
\nappreared certain images of Jesus said to be \u201cnot made with hands\u201d.  The earliest legend concerns the \u201cImage of
\nEdessa\u201d.  The king of Edessa (Turkey)
\nwrote to Jesus asking him to come and cure him of leprosy.   Unable to visit, Jesus sent a miraculous
\nself-portrait imbued with curative power. 
\nSome equate the Shroud of Turin with the Edessa story, however the
\nShroud bears the entire front and back impressions of an apparently crucified
\nman.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nThere has long been controversy on whether this textile is
\nthe burial shroud of Jesus Christ or a medieval fabrication.  Results of carbon-dating posited the age of
\nthis textile to be no older than the 1200\u2019s. 
\nOthers suggest that the actual date cannot be determined due to
\ncontamination by centuries of manipulation.   
\nThe 14 \u00bd foot of linen fiber is owned by the pope but it is in the care
\nof the archdiocese of Turin.   The Catholic Church does not make any claims
\ntoward its authenticity and has long acknowledged that there are disagreements
\nand questions that have not been successfully addressed.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDespite the controversy, there have been more than a million
\nfree tickets reserved by would-be visitors, and many dates for viewing have
\nalready sold out.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThere are other \u201cMiraculous\u201d portraits of Jesus, including
\nthe Veronica Veils.  Veronica was  a wealthy woman of Jerusalem who witnessed
\nthe journey to Golgatha that Christ made with the cross.  She wiped his face with her veil and his
\nvisage was imprinted upon it.  There
\nwere many \u201doriginals\u201d of the textile and it was assumed that they had been
\npainted.  The legend asserts that the
\nimage could duplicate itself miraculously <\/span><\/div>\n
