\nAn easily recognized motif, Paisley, is one of many
\nvariations.  The name \u201cPaisley\u201d is
\nassociated with the Scottish city where woven Paisley shawls were manufactured
\nto replace the costly Indian cashmere shawls, which were imported for the very
\nwealthy European market.  However, the
\nmotif originated in India as \u201cButah \u201c (Buteh) the Hindu word, meaning flower.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe French called the design \u201cpalmette\u201d, the English knew it
\nas \u201cflame and spearhead pine\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe motif, whether an elaborate teardrop design or a plant
\nform with leaves and stem or a pinecone and medallion form, has been adapted
\nfor centuries for use in art and textiles. The design is marked by an absence
\nof dimension and can be found as a simple , singular form or as an allover, elaborate
\ndesign depending upon the requirement of the finished textile.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nA related design element is known as a \u201cButi\u201d which is Hindu
\nfor \u201csmall flower\u201d.  It is a small
\nmotif, which may be abstracted, and is used as a filler pattern, small in scale
\nand repetitive. An example of Buti
\npatterns can be found in delicate Foulard textiles.  Originally woven in silk for men\u2019s ties and fine handkerchiefs,
\nthey now can be found in acetate and manufactured fabrics.<\/span><\/div>\n
