{"id":380,"date":"2015-08-22T19:17:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-22T19:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/22\/salvery-in-the-factory-2\/"},"modified":"2015-08-22T19:17:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-22T19:17:00","slug":"salvery-in-the-factory-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/salvery-in-the-factory-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Salvery in the Factory"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Slavery<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-IqbgJLowOsA\/VdYnaBN-3LI\/AAAAAAAACbc\/Q1TdDo0u0eg\/s1600\/slavery.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"215\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-IqbgJLowOsA\/VdYnaBN-3LI\/AAAAAAAACbc\/Q1TdDo0u0eg\/s320\/slavery.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">August 23rd is International Slavery Remembrance Day.&nbsp; Too often we think of the institution of<br \/>\nslavery as something in the past.&nbsp;<br \/>\nIndeed, the history of slavery is as old as the history of mankind.&nbsp; There always existed the more powerful, the<br \/>\nmore influential, the richer\u2026and the poorest, the more ignorant, the more<br \/>\nvulnerable.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">The ancient Romans had slaves, the Egyptian slaves built the<br \/>\npyramids and the Great Wall of China was constructed by more than 3 million<br \/>\nslaves.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">We are familiar with the African-American Slave trade that<br \/>\ninvolved not only the Americas and Africa but relied upon European countries to<br \/>\nprovide the slave transports.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Sadly, slavery is not the past.&nbsp; According to an article in the Washington Post, Oct. 17, 2013, it<br \/>\nwas estimated by the Walk-Free Foundation that more than 29 million people<br \/>\nthroughout the world were living as slaves (nearly 60,000 in the US). In 1981<br \/>\nMauritania was the last country to officially abolish slavery.&nbsp; Still, that country has one of the highest<br \/>\npercentages of the population (nearly 4%) enslaved.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">The word \u201cslave\u201d was first applied to captives of Slavic<br \/>\norigin in southeastern Europe and is defined as a human being who is owned by<br \/>\nand absolutely subject to another human being, as by capture, purchase or<br \/>\nbirth.&nbsp; There are many types of slavery,<br \/>\nfrom children and young women sold in the sex trade to workers harvesting<br \/>\ncoffee beans and cacoa, miners in gold mines and factory workers working under<br \/>\nappalling conditions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Over the next few months I will introduce thoughts (and<br \/>\nfacts) about slavery in the field of textiles and textile production.&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Slavery August 23rd is International Slavery Remembrance Day.&nbsp; Too often we think of the institution of slavery as something in the past.&nbsp; Indeed, the history of slavery is as old as the history of mankind.&nbsp; There always existed the more powerful, the more influential, the richer\u2026and the poorest, the more ignorant, the more vulnerable.
