{"id":378,"date":"2015-09-05T19:37:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-05T19:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/05\/kevlar-2\/"},"modified":"2015-09-05T19:37:00","modified_gmt":"2015-09-05T19:37:00","slug":"kevlar-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/kevlar-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Kevlar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Genius of Stephanie Kwolek<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Most of you know, by now, that I volunteer in the Children\u2019s<br \/>\nRoom of the Santa Fe&nbsp; Library.&nbsp; I am amazed every week by the number of<br \/>\nvolumes we have for children of all ages and the wide variety of topics these<br \/>\nbooks cover. &nbsp;Last week I happened upon<br \/>\na book, quite by accident.&nbsp; Here was the<br \/>\nstory of the DuPont chemist who discovered the formula for synthesizing the<br \/>\nfiber we know as Kevlar.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-xJXy65JdmQM\/Vd9lrEf0A6I\/AAAAAAAACcg\/CDhUITVVB_A\/s1600\/kevlar%2B2.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"640\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-xJXy65JdmQM\/Vd9lrEf0A6I\/AAAAAAAACcg\/CDhUITVVB_A\/s640\/kevlar%2B2.jpg\" width=\"508\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Woman Who Invented The Thread That Stops Bullets &#8211;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Genius of Stephanie Kwolek, Edwin Brit Wyckoff,&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Enslow Publishers, Inc., Brooklyn Heights, NJ, 2014<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Born on July 31, 1923 in Kensington, Pennsylvania, Stephanie<br \/>\nKwolek had intended to become a physician.&nbsp;<br \/>\nShe majored in chemistry at the Carnegie Institute of Technology,<br \/>\ngraduating in 1946.&nbsp; Working at DuPont<br \/>\nwas meant to be a temporary stop on her way to a medical career.&nbsp; She would remain at DuPont as a chemist for<br \/>\n40 years.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">In 1964 she led a group of chemists searching for a<br \/>\nlightweight, super strong fiber for the manufacture of automobile tires.&nbsp; Lighter weight tires could reduce gasoline<br \/>\nconsumption and there was anticipation of a shortage in the future. More than<br \/>\n100,000 chains of chemical polymers were produced but none had the desired<br \/>\nstrength.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/b7\/Kevlar_chemical_structure_H-bonds.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kevlar_chemical_structure_H-bonds.png (2481\u00d71243)\" border=\"0\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/b7\/Kevlar_chemical_structure_H-bonds.png\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide solution was cloudy and<br \/>\nthinner than other tested solutions.&nbsp;<br \/>\nBeneath the microscope the chemical chains were straight and in<br \/>\nalignment after spinning.
