{"id":374,"date":"2015-10-04T20:01:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-04T20:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/04\/slavery-in-the-factory-partt-5-child-lbor-2\/"},"modified":"2015-10-04T20:01:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-04T20:01:00","slug":"slavery-in-the-factory-partt-5-child-lbor-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/slavery-in-the-factory-partt-5-child-lbor-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Slavery in the Factory  -Partt 5    Child Lbor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Slavery in the Factory- Part 5<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Child labor is a topic that demands some consideration.&nbsp; Children have always been part of the work<br \/>\nforce due to economic considerations of their families.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">In England and Scotland in the late 1700\u2019s, 2\/3 of the<br \/>\nworkers in 143 water-powered cotton mills were children.&nbsp;&nbsp; Without their meager addition to their<br \/>\nfamily\u2019s finances the entire family would be working in<br \/>\ngovernment-sponsored&nbsp; poor houses, and<br \/>\ntheir plight would have been even more dismal.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Cultural differences come into the debate also.&nbsp; In SE Asia child labor (Mui Tsai) was<br \/>\nrationalized and even encouraged as tradition.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Most countries have child labor laws that mandate a minimum<br \/>\nage a child may work and also the number of hours \/week.&nbsp; From our discussions regarding slave labor<br \/>\nin factories in the previous blogs it would be hard to believe that all<br \/>\nmanufacturers follow the rules.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Again, Bangladesh disregards the rules and children work in<br \/>\nfactories&nbsp; for up to 16 hours a<br \/>\nday.&nbsp; Some do menial work such as<br \/>\nclipping threads from garments, while older children operate the machines in<br \/>\npoorly ventilated, crowded quarters.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThere are those that argue that when children are displaced from illegal<br \/>\nfactory jobs, they simply go to another manufacturer, or worse, live off the<br \/>\nstreets.&nbsp; The answer remains the same,<br \/>\npaying a living wage to adults negates the necessity of child labor.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Today there are many children who work in family businesses<br \/>\nand there are exceptions to the child labor laws that allow this under certain<br \/>\nconditions. &nbsp;Nearly all legislation<br \/>\nrequires sensible working hours which allows for education, and safe<br \/>\nconditions.&nbsp; Most of these children work<br \/>\nin agriculture, alongside their families.&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt would be extremely difficult for these farmers to make a living<br \/>\nwithout the efforts of all the family members, especially during times of<br \/>\nplanting and harvesting.&nbsp; There is one<br \/>\ndisturbing note:&nbsp; according to labor<br \/>\nstatistics, 12% of children working in agriculture suffer injuries. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">It is also thought by some sociologists that children<br \/>\nworking with family, in family run businesses, are more cognizant of family<br \/>\nfinances and appreciate the rewards of labor as opposed to children who have<br \/>\nnever worked.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Slavery in the Factory- Part 5 Child labor is a topic that demands some consideration.&nbsp; Children have always been part of the work force due to economic considerations of their families.
