Hans Christian Anderson wrote of the Emperor\u2019s New Clothes<br \/>\n(to which we will return momentarily).&nbsp;<br \/>\nPolonius advised Laertes (Hamlet- William Shakespeare) \u201cfor apparel oft<br \/>\nproclaims the man\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\nSo there appears to be a theme here.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nCloth is a basic human creation.&nbsp; This experience is so commonplace that we rarely think about the<br \/>\nmultiple layers (no pun intended) of meaning our choice of clothing<br \/>\nconvey.&nbsp; Intentionally, or not, we use<br \/>\nour dress as an identifier to others.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThis, I firmly believe, is an individual choice,, one based upon social,<br \/>\nethnic, religious issues.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThroughout history there have been certain regulations<br \/>\nenacted regarding this freedom of choice.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe common Roman was not allowed to wear the color purple.&nbsp; There were laws forbidding the use of gold<br \/>\nthreads to accent clothing in China.&nbsp;<br \/>\nNow it is rare that laws proscribing dress codes become an international<br \/>\ndiscussion.&nbsp; Certainly, there is a case<br \/>\nfor dress that is worn to purposely antagonize or offend, although it could be<br \/>\nargued that it is the right of people to be obnoxious.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nAll this brings this discussion to the recent controversy in<br \/>\nFrance over the wearing of \u201cburkinis\u201d.&nbsp;<br \/>\nMuslim women have a modesty dress code, which ranges from hair coverings<br \/>\nto full body garments, depending upon their customs and religious beliefs.&nbsp; One fashion designer, Vanessa Lourenco, felt<br \/>\nMuslim women should be able to conform with their religious codes and, at the<br \/>\nsame time, enjoy the pleasures of the seaside with their families.&nbsp; Thereby, the \u201cburkini\u201d was born.&nbsp; This is obviously a Muslim item of apparel,<br \/>\nalthough, with all the uproar it has created, I would suspect many non-Muslim<br \/>\nwomen might wear it in protest.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThis action follows the terrorist attacks in France.&nbsp; There have been more than 30 bans<\/div>\n<div>\n&nbsp;(the first in<br \/>\nCannes) on so called inappropriate clothing for women.&nbsp; That they are targeting Muslim women is<br \/>\nobvious.&nbsp; This ethnic profiling will not<br \/>\nstop terrorist activities.&nbsp; There must<br \/>\nbe more effective measures that can be taken.&nbsp;<br \/>\nOn Friday, the highest court in France The Council of State struck down<br \/>\nthe ban in one town.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nBack to Anderson\u2019s The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes.&nbsp; The tale goes that there was a very &nbsp;officious Emperor, who ruled with the notion<br \/>\nthat all who disagreed with him were worthless and stupid.&nbsp; This bully was approached by two tailors,<br \/>\nwho claimed they would make the ruler a fabulous set of clothes, very comfortable<br \/>\nand very prestigious-looking.&nbsp; Of<br \/>\ncourse, they said, only those who were wise and deserving of high honors could<br \/>\nactually see the clothing, it would be invisible to all others.&nbsp; You can already guess the outcome.&nbsp; The naked Emperor paraded before his<br \/>\ncitizens, confident of his attire.&nbsp; As<br \/>\nTwain said \u201dnaked people have little or. no power\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>\nSo, to those in charge of such things in France, I say<br \/>\n\u201cenough, already.&nbsp; Let it go\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has been said&nbsp; that \u201cclothes maketh the man\u201d.&nbsp; Mark Twain is quoted as saying\u201d Clothes make the man-Naked people have little or no power\u201d.
