(1742-1802)<br \/>\nand his brother Jean Dollfus (1729-1800), selling their hand-painted Indian<br \/>\ncotton prints throughout Europe.&nbsp; They<br \/>\nexpanded and sold their fabrics internationally.&nbsp; In the late 1700\u2019s Jean-Henri\u2019s nephew, Daniel (1769-1818)&nbsp; ran the company and married Anne-Marie Mieg,<br \/>\nadding her surname to the company\u2019s logo.&nbsp;<br \/>\nD.M.C.&nbsp;&nbsp; Jean Dollfus-Meig (1800-<br \/>\n1887)&nbsp;&nbsp; while studying at Leeds became<br \/>\nacquainted with John Mercer\u2019s process of thread manufacturing,<br \/>\n\u201cmercerization\u201d&nbsp; Mercer, a calico<br \/>\nprinter and self-taught chemist, patented his process (1850) which changed the<br \/>\ntexture of cotton thread, strengthening it and giving it a silk-like<br \/>\nluster. &nbsp; Jean Dollfus-Meig introduced this process in<br \/>\n1898 to the factory in Mulhouse, France.&nbsp;<br \/>\nSince thread quality depends on the purity of the water used in its<br \/>\nbleaching and dyeing, the properties of the water (Vorges River)&nbsp; in Mulhouse made this an ideal location for<br \/>\nthe factory.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt;\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThe story of the manufacturing of fine threads and<br \/>\nyarns&nbsp; includes the meeting of&nbsp; Jean Dollfud-Meig and the famous<br \/>\nembroiderer, Therese de Dillmont.&nbsp; When<br \/>\nJean&nbsp; encountered her work in an<br \/>\nexhibition in Paris, he invited her to Mulhouse to tour his factory.&nbsp; She subsequently moved to Dornach , a nearby<br \/>\ntown and established&nbsp; school of<br \/>\nneedlework in close cooperation with DMC.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nHer famous \u201cEncyclopediie des ouvrages des dames\u201d (\u201cEncyclopedia of<br \/>\nLadies Handicrafts) has been translated and distributed to more than seventeen<br \/>\ncountries.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nIn 1961 DMC merged with Thiriez &amp; Cartier Bresson, a<br \/>\nFrench Textile firm of over 250 years.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe company name remained DMC but the logo was changed , replacing the<br \/>\nDMC bell with the now famous Thiriez\u2019s horse head.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nManufactured threads include: Embroidery floss, six stranded cotton. *Twisted separable, shiny thread, suitable for surface stitchery, counted-, pulled-and drawn-thread work. &nbsp;Available in 454 colors.<\/div>\n<div>\n<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->&nbsp;
