{"id":308,"date":"2018-04-15T18:18:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-15T18:18:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2024-02-13T04:32:56","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T04:32:56","slug":"camelid-fibers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/camelid-fibers.html","title":{"rendered":"Camelid Fibers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nMeet the Camelids<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThe Camelid family originated in North America around 50<br \/>\nmillion years ago, and one would have thought that camels and their relatives<br \/>\ncame from Asia or Africa!<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nOver the years the camelid family branched into two main<br \/>\ngroups, known as tribes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>One tribe, the<br \/>\nLamini, gave rise to New World camels, which migrated to South America.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The original Lamini tribe became extinct in<br \/>\nNorth America nearly 12,000 years ago and we see their South American<br \/>\ndescendants as alpacas, llamas, guanacos, and vicunas.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The second main tribe, known as the Camelini<br \/>\n(Old World camels) migrated to Asia across the Bering Land Bridge and became<br \/>\nthe Bactrian and Dromedary camels of Asia and Africa.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nOf interest to us textile folks are the camelid fibers, each<br \/>\nunique.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Today we will look at camels.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThe Bactrian ( 2 humped ) camel perhaps originated in<br \/>\nAfghanistan which was called Bactria in ancient times.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Its tan to dark brown hair, as long as 10<br \/>\ninches in length, is shed once a year.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>There are both domesticated and wild Bactrian camels, although the wild<br \/>\npopulation is considered engangered.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>There are differences between domesticated and wild Bactrians, including<br \/>\nsome differences in their DNA.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThe Dromedary camels (single-humped) are adapted to hot<br \/>\nclimates and can survive for long periods without water.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>However, they produce less useable fiber<br \/>\nthan Bactrian, although Arvana dromedaries can produce up to 7 pounds of<br \/>\nfluff.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The wild dromedaries are extinct<br \/>\nso that all dromedaries are domesticated.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>In Australia there are large herds that have gone feral, their<br \/>\ndomesticated parents were brought to Australia in the late 1800\u2019s to access<br \/>\ndesert areas. <\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nCamels are double-coated.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>The coarse hair is very strong and suitably used for ropes, halters<br \/>\netc.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The undercoats are down that can<br \/>\nbe gathered by hand in the spring or by combing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Wool Products Labeling Act classifies camel hair as<br \/>\nwool.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is usually combined with other<br \/>\nwool fibers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Fabric called camel hair<br \/>\nis often a twill weave with a deep nap ( or may have a flat finish) and is very<br \/>\nsoft with a luxurious draping quality.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/camelid-2B1.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1286\" data-original-width=\"1600\" height=\"321\" src=\"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/camelid-2B1-300x241.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Some camel friends I met in Morocco<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meet the Camelids The Camelid family originated in North America around 50 million years ago, and one would have thought that camels and their relatives came from Asia or Africa!
