<\/span>The one problem is<br \/>\nthat we are also replacing the carpeting in our walk-in closet with tile<br \/>\nflooring to match the bathroom tiles.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>What this means is that everything in the closet needs to be removed,<br \/>\nwith the exception of the highest shelves, which should be ok covered with dust<br \/>\ncloths.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Some garments we will place in<br \/>\nthe guestroom closet (where we will be the guests for 3 weeks),<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Others we will hang, covered, on<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>portable garment racks in the garage.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I am confident that it will be necessary to<br \/>\nplace the overfill on the bed, covered with sheets.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>No matter how protected there will be dust and a certain amount<br \/>\nof garment cleaning will be required.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\nThis situation has led me to consider how laundering was<br \/>\ndone in the past.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>When my mother was a<br \/>\nyoung housewife laundry was<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>much more<br \/>\nof a chore ( of course I never did understand her need to iron absolutely<br \/>\neverything, with the exception of bath towels).<\/div>\n<div>\nI turned to America\u2019s Housekeeping Book as a reference.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>This small volume is packed with information<br \/>\nany homemaker post-WWII would need to consider in keeping the perfect<br \/>\nhome.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>There is an entire section<br \/>\ndedicated to LAUNDERING which includes laundry equipment, soaps, water<br \/>\nsofteners, ironing procedures and treatment of spots and stains.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>There are recipes for making bluing, starch<br \/>\nand bleaching liquids.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/PhotoScanAmerica-2527s-2BHousekeeping-2BBook.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; <\/span>All this detritus<br \/>\nwas brought into the home and cleaning was done by brushing<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>and spot cleaning with damp clothes.<\/div>\n<div>\n<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->&nbsp; Washing clothes ( and, apparently bodies) was undertaken once a<br \/>\nmonth or so.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Those without house-hold<br \/>\nhelp drew water from the city wells for washing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Soap was made from lye and animal fats.
