{"id":27,"date":"2015-11-29T20:07:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-29T20:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/29\/sporty-cycle-fashions\/"},"modified":"2015-11-29T20:07:00","modified_gmt":"2015-11-29T20:07:00","slug":"sporty-cycle-fashions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinnamonstudio.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/sporty-cycle-fashions.html","title":{"rendered":"Sporty Cycle Fashions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div>Cyclist\u2019s Fashions<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I recently read an article by Karen LeBat writing for The Berg Fashion Library entitled \u201cBicycle Clothing\u201d.&nbsp; This caught my eye since my husband is an avid cyclist.&nbsp; Here in Santa Fe cycling is very popular as the weather is generally conducive to the sport throughout the year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>LeBat wrote of early cycling (mid 1800\u2019s) clothing problems for women and Victorian notions of femininity and modesty issues.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I actually found a print by Rudolph Ackermann (1819) of women astride English bicycles with drop seats allowing female riders to wear their long skirts.&nbsp; Ackermann was a London print maker and businessman who established The Print and Picture Emporium at 101 Strand, London.&nbsp; Coincidentally, Ackermann also dabbled&nbsp; as an inventor and patented mechanisms for carriages.&nbsp; He also obtained patents for various bicycle components, although it is not clear that he actually invented these components or merely bought the patent rights.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-JIuQMCEDuLU\/VkuHUKyROmI\/AAAAAAAACho\/KSzw2Pp2Tvs\/s1600\/bicycle%2B1.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-JIuQMCEDuLU\/VkuHUKyROmI\/AAAAAAAACho\/KSzw2Pp2Tvs\/s400\/bicycle%2B1.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Ackermann&#8217;s print advertising &#8220;Ladies Hobbyhorses&#8221; now exhibiting at 40 Brewer Streeet<br \/>Published May, 12, 1819 at &nbsp;R. Achermanns, 101 Strand<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>By the late 1800\u2019s women\u2019s fashions introduced knickerbockers also known as \u201cbloomers\u201d named after Amelia Jenks Bloomer an American reformer.&nbsp; \u201cBloomers\u201d were loose, boxy trousers, gathered at the ankle or knee and worn by women and girls for participation in athletics.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Men\u2019s cycling clothing consisted of vests with insignias of their racing clubs worn over long shirts.&nbsp; Special shoes and headgear soon appeared.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>According to LeBat, in the early 1920\u2019s, only the professional cyclists wore specialized clothing and the average cyclist wore popular casual clothing.&nbsp; Today there is a large textile industry dedicated to sports clothing, utilizing the most advanced fibers and garment designs.
